The Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak Temple

Jeff Burzacott October 30, 2015

Here's your chance to tick Egypt off your must-see bucket list.

Just by subscribing to Nile Magazine you could win a 14-day tour of Egypt with On The Go tours! Click on the 'Nile Store' button at the top of this page to enter the draw and subscribe to Nile. The draw closes at midnight on October 31.

Pictured is one of the highlights of your Egyptian tour, the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak Temple.

Visitors today wander amongst a forest of 134 towering papyrus-shaped sandstone columns which represent the primeval papyrus swamp that grew on the shores of the first land to appear on the day of creation.

The columns are simply massive – up to 21 metres high, with a diameter of over three metres.

The Hall was begun by the 19th Dynasty's hugely energetic King Seti I, (c 1280 BC) and completed by his son, Ramesses II. However the Hall was to echo to the sound of chisels again and again over the next two centuries. 120 years later, Ramesses IV added his own cartouches to the central line of columns, associating himself with the greatness of his ancestors. Later, Ramesses VI and the High Priest of Amun-Re, Herihor, added their names as well.

Good luck in the draw!
